Ava Brackett
Long Beach, CA

Recent graduate from CSULB BCCM with a Bachelor's in Music Composition.

I started playing violin when I was in elementary school, and I was in the orchestra all throughout elementary, middle, and high school. I decided after finishing high school that I wanted to pursue a career involving music. I decided to major in music at Long Beach City College (LBCC). I received composition lessons for five semesters and created pieces for solo violin and piano, violin and cello, string quartet, orchestra, voice and piano, and solo piano. I graduated from LBCC with an Associate's in Music in June 2021. I transferred to California State University, Long Beach in August 2021, and my compositional palette expanded by being surrounded by a large group of 24 composers and more composition faculty. At CSULB, I attended weekly masterclass sessions where either guest speakers would discuss their music/music composition career, students would present their works, or teachers would present their works. During my time at CSULB, I was in the New Music and Laptop ensembles, which encouraged me to write music for those ensembles. I also met dancers, animators, and filmmakers, and was able to collaborate on projects with them. While I was a student at CSULB, I became President of the Composers' Guild. As President of the Composers’ Guild, I had multiple responsibilities such as organizing the concerts, reaching out to other clubs to collaborate, writing grants, and fundraising with local businesses. I helped composers find performers and helped them feel motivated to have their pieces shown at the concert. During the 2022-2023 school year, I organized 4 concerts, including my Senior Recital I did in order to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree. https://www.youtube.com/live/62jj7XyOUTc?feature=share As a composition teacher, I want to give my students the necessary tools that will help them understand how some composers may develop their music, so they can explore it on their own.

Kevin Kopsco

Music Composition, Theory, Ear Training, Voice, Production and the Kitchen Sink

I attended Berklee College of Music for 3 years where I majored in Music Production and completed the jazz theory course and jazz instrumentation course. I produced my first musical rock opera there as well, entitled "Tinn Kisten." I then transferred to the Boston Conseravtory where I completed every classical theory course they had along with a thorough orchestral instrumentation course. There I began my career in writing for classical instruments as well as dabbling in world and folk instrumentation. I received my first award and commission there for winning the Boston Conservatory Wind Ensemble Competition and was commissioned to write my piece "Ekpyrosis." I finished my Bachelors of Arts in Music Composition with an opera I wrote, was librettist, and directed entitled "Oneirism" with a full orchestra and a small cast. I then received my Masters of Arts in Music Composition from Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University where I have a focus in Electronic Music production. I finished that degree with a sketch comedy opera entitled "Dan'p," where I was writer, librettist, musical director, and director. I bring a very thorough knowledge of creation to my students' lessons. I'm not only well versed in a diversity of western styles and genres, but I'm also very experienced and learned in music production, electronic music, and video editing, as well as poetry, libretto, and script writing. Whatever it is my student wants to accomplish, I can support and supplement everything they will need to make their vision a reality. I like to encourage my students that everything is possible. In the eternal space of artistic direction, I provide a comforting introduction to a truly infinite viewpoint that can be frighteningly intimidating. We work to establish limitations in order to build the space craft that is your piece. We determine the physics within the boundaries of the vehicle and pick a direction and go!

Student-centric and versatile multi-instrumentalist, composer, performer, and recording artist

How is it possible to compose music with instruments and/or computers? With tutoring in Music Composition, the mystery behind these higher concepts of music-making are broken down to the fundamentals and put back together for efficient creativity through the Gentle Release Model and Universal Backwards Design approaches that are incorporated for self-efficacy. My expertise in the field of music and education is wide-ranging and allows for students to set, achieve, and exceed goals quickly. As an experienced recording artist and producer, I've composed and performed in all genres. From Musical Theater to Latin Jazz, Big Band Jazz to Heavy Metal, they all use the 12-note scale and vertical/horizontal grids with instrument-intuitive techniques to compose. Since I am a multi-instrumentalist and advanced music theoretician, helping students work on how the chords, modes, and scales apply to their specific needs and goals is my passion. In education, I have taught any and all kinds of music classes with during and after school programs for grade PreK-high school, as well as professional development for classroom teachers in music integration practices across the US in-person and online. When I continued my own education with a Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, it was to focus on online education techniques for all ages. With innovative technologies constantly evolving, I love keeping up with the different hardware and software that allows myself and students to execute amazing music-making no matter where we are!
